A train trip (on another sunny day!) took us to Vila Real de San Antonio - a lovely little town - to catch the ferry to Ayamonte, across the river in Spain.
Vila Real has a great old Art Deco station, which is now mostly boarded up, as were a lot of the little station buildings along the way. The town centre was clean and pretty, with a bustling market and lots of little shops, mainly selling linen and towels!
The ferry trip took 15 minutes, and the boat moors just 5 minutes walk from Ayamonte centre and a beautiful plaza. The town is spotless, with lots of little cobbled streets and Spanish architecture, and a hive of activity. We had imagined coming back for a longer stay, but the current financial crisis and massive unemployment means that some things that were of particular interest to us - i.e. the bowls club! - are not the thriving places they once were unfortunately, so we will be looking a little further east, possibly Estepona.
