Spent Sunday morning exploring the amphitheatre and theatre, before heading to the CIAC volunteer info at the Congresso, getting ready for a week of work as a volunteer at the XVIIIth International Congress of Classical Archaeology.

The amphitheatre is not as well preserved as some I've seen, but interesting nonetheless. The theatre is pretty amazing, but I imagine a lot of it is rebuilt. There were some interesting buildings in the vicinity of the theatre, one in particular had some wall painting still visible.

Badajoz itself was not very exciting, but I struck it lucky at the museum, which holds the largest collection of proto historic stelae. The museum was in a palace inside the walls of the Alcazaba. We also found a great cafe for lunch.

Caceres was nice, with a fantastic market and a beautiful medieval area. The Womad concert was about to begin, and there were lots of food sellers set up in medieval style tents, and several buskers. Happens every year, so one to put in the diary for future reference :-)

An awesome Museum, both in content and design - great use of a large space. Currently celebrating 175 years of archaeology museums in Merida. Well worth a visit to Merida just to see the museum :-)

A quick visit to Estepona, west of Marbella, to check out the lawn bowls club and see if it's somewhere to have an extended stay at some point. Estepona itself is nice - the old town area is very pretty, and the beach is lovely - but getting in and out of the town is through a busy highway with apartments all along it for miles and miles. Sort of spoils it really. Plus the bus ride from Sevile is not good for those who don't like heights and sheer drops beside the coach! Went back the long way - coach to Cadiz, then train to Seville :-D

Just half an hour by bus from Seville is Italica, where Scipio settled his veterans in 206 BC, and where the families of Trajan and Hadrian were from.

Much of the old town lies under modern Saltiponce, and what has been excavated has been seriously robbed for building material over time, but the ruins are quite evocative, and several mosaics are still in situ. The foundations of villas, shops and the forum are visible, and the amphitheatre was one of the biggest in the empire, seating 25,000.

For a 1.5 euro bus fare (each way), and a 1.5 euro entry fee (no charge for Europeans), it's worth a visit, especially if followed by a cold beer and tapas at the taberna directly outside the site :-)
